Why Publishing Houses Are So Strict About Manuscript Formats

Most publishing houses will only look at manuscripts that are presented in a specified format. The reason we specify the electronic formatting as we do is because we have to import your manuscript into our special publishing computer programs.

If your manuscript is formatted according to specification this is a simple and quick process. If not, we could be struggling for days trying to figure out just where the incompatibility lies that is causing our printing program to do unpredictable things with your text. This costs us time and money, as well as possible delays and missed deadlines.

We will not accept your manuscript unless it is presented to us in the format specified.

Formatting Guidelines For Kima Global

The aim of these somewhat stringent rules is to ensure a smooth production flow. By sticking to these guidelines errors are minimised.

All manuscripts that we accept for publication are to follow these guidelines:

  1. Text to be captured in MS Word or WordPerfect supplied as a copy on disk as well as a hard copy in the style you envisage for your book. We reserve the right not to follow your example, but it is useful to have some idea of your preferences.
  2. Each chapter in its own file.
  3. Footnotes and endnotes in a separate file with indications in the hard copy as to where they come in.
  4. Words or phrases to be indexed in a separate file.
  5. No extra line space between paragraphs. If your paragraphs are indented, use the tab key not the space bar!
  6. No Tables in the electronic files please, but show them in your hard copy. Tabs or columns are acceptable.
  7. Images are to be supplied as 300 dpi tiff files. These too must be in a separate file. The text should indicate where the graphs or pictures are to be placed.
  8. If you are far away from us we will most likely send your first proof in an acrobat file for you to edit. Your corrections must be clearly noted in an email with both the page number and which paragraph.

Reducing The Cost of Manuscript Submissions

We do understand that sending out printed copies of your manuscript can become expensive. We therefore suggest that you fill out our submission form first, and cut and paste the table of contents and a sample of a chapter of your work. If we feel that the manuscript has the potential to be right for our book lists we will contact you and ask for a full submission.
